Live Streaming Settings: Check Them Tonight
Your child wants to go live. Here’s how to check who can watch, who can comment, and whether gifts are switched on, on TikTok, Twitch and YouTube.

Live streaming means broadcasting video to anyone watching, in real time, with no edit and no way to take it back. Many children enjoy it, and it can build confidence. But a live stream can reveal personal details by accident, reach strangers, and be recorded and shared long after it ends. This guide walks you through the settings to check on TikTok, Twitch and YouTube, and the family rules that matter more than any menu.
Start with the conversation
Before you change anything, ask your child what they stream, who usually watches, and what they enjoy about it. With a younger child, set things up together. With a teen, explain what you’re checking and why. Settings changed behind a teen’s back tend to get undone, and they teach your child that you won’t listen.
Ask three questions: Who watches most? Who talks to you in the chat? Has anyone ever asked you to move to a private app?
Check the age rules first
Each platform sets its own minimum age for going live, and those rules change. Check the current policy in the app or on the platform’s help pages, rather than relying on what a friend said. If your child is under the minimum, the answer is ‘not yet’. That’s a clear, fair rule.
TikTok: Link Family Pairing and check Live
If your child has a TikTok account, link it to yours first. Open your profile, tap the menu, and go to Settings and privacy → Family Pairing. Follow the prompts to link your account.
Once linked, check:
- Direct messages, which should be limited or off for younger users.
- Restricted Mode, which filters more mature content.
- The Live options, where you can turn off gifts and comments if the option is offered.
Menu names move around. If you can’t find a label, search the settings for ‘Live’ or ‘gifts’.
