Talking to your child about online safety doesn't have to feel like a lecture. The best conversations happen naturally — at the right moment, with the right words. Below are proven conversation starters, grouped by age, so you can step in confidently whenever the moment arises.
Ages 4–6: First Screens
Start simple. At this age, children are just encountering tablets and family devices for the first time.
Try saying
- "If you ever see something on the screen that makes you feel funny or scared, come and tell me straight away — you won't be in trouble."
- "We always ask a grown-up before clicking on something new."
- "The internet is like a big city — there are lovely places and places we don't go."
What to reinforce
- The concept of asking permission before clicking anything new, and that coming to you is always safe.
Ages 7–9: Social Awareness Builds
Children this age are starting to notice other people online — in games, YouTube comments, and sometimes messaging apps.
Try saying
- "Has anyone online ever said something that made you feel uncomfortable? You can always show me."
- "If someone asks you questions online that a stranger wouldn't ask in real life — like where you live or what school you go to — that's a red flag. Tell me."
- "What's your favourite game right now? Can you show me how it works?"
